2017 HardieDesign Contest – Honorable Mention

Dudley Carter, a beloved Pacific Northwest woodcarver who made a home in the Redmond community, left a legacy of art and sculptures in many public spaces. GGLO’s namesake multifamily project represented an opportunity to tell the story of Carter, whose spirit and artistic sensibilities are reflected throughout—in the overall massing, exterior architectural expression, interior design concepts, details, and art selection.

Carter was described as an artist in whom “the man, the geography and the elements coalesce.” The wood and access to natural light prominently featured in this LEED Gold certified building demonstrates respect for the land on which it sits. The rooftop forest overlooks Heron Rookery and features local, drought-tolerant plant life.

Residents and the general public can experience Carter’s influence daily from passing by a large reclaimed wood log at the main entry, enjoying specially carved works by his granddaughter in the interior main lobby, and walking through a small art gallery open to the public that displays an original Dudley Carter sculpture. Expansive glazing lends a treehouse feel to north-facing units and amenity spaces, and an exterior feature stair provides direct access to the city path and neighboring park.

Carter on the Park reshaped an underutilized section of downtown Redmond by bringing a perfect balance of urban living and connection to nature that would likely have made Carter proud.
